Thaw has its positive and negative sides. :]
Don't think that I am wasting my time when I don't paint.
What I've been doing recently? Being sick! Just like proper Nurgle worshippers should do, we spread stomach flu around and to celebrate it we hid at home for a whole week. (Another week, because it was Balrogs second disease within a month.)
That was superb! We anxiously await developing some mutations ;)))

Nie myślcie, że kiedy nie maluję, trwonię czas.
Co ostatnio robiłam? Chorowałam! Jak na wyznawców Nurgla przystało rozsialiśmy grypę jelitową po okolicy i sami dla celebrowania tego wydarzenia zaszyliśmy się na cały tydzień w domu. (Na kolejny tydzień, bo to 2. choroba Balroga w ciągu jednego miesiąca.)
Było suuuuuper! Z niecierpliwością czekamy mutacji ;)))

As soon as I felt better I greeted and hugged my tools and that was all I managed to do with them, because for the whole day I was sitting surrounded with boxes full of bits, trying to find some bits for a scenic base for a Chaos Dwarf model. No matter how many bits I have in my boxes, there is never enough... But eventually I came up with an idea. Then I only needed to allow Mahon to criticize me, to tweak the concept under additional pressure ;P Fortunately there was no objections ;)

Jak tylko poczułam się lepiej, wyściskałam się na powitanie z moimi narzędziami i to by było na tyle, bo cały dzień siedziałam zakopana w kartonach z częściami i elementami do zbudowania podstawki pod krasnoluda chaosu. Ile bym nie miała części zawsze jest mi za mało ... ale w końcu coś wymyśliłam. Jeszcze tylko pozwolić się skrytykować Mahoniowi, żeby pod presją dopracować koncepcję ;P Ale na szczęście nie zgłosił sprzeciwu. ;)

Tau XV-89 Crisis Battlesuit - Tutorial

I prepared expanded version of my tutorial about painting the Tau battlesuit. Maybe you will find it interesting :) And what's up with you?

Yesterday I helped Balrog play soccer with our cat using a Christmas tree ball. As surprising as it may be, the more determined player was... Balrog ^^

And so we keep walking in our flat - sometimes sprinting to catch the ball or the cat, and sometimes just strolling with no goal at all.

Wczoraj pomagałam Balrogowi grać z kotem w bombkę nożną. Zaskakująco, w grze większą determinacją wykazał się Balrog ^^

Tak to spacerujemy po całym mieszkaniu - czasem sprintem za bombką albo kotem, a czasem spacerowo bez widocznego celu.

When I am not working as a support for Balrog, I am tinkering with Red Sonja. The model is superb! I am enjoying painting it so much. And I had a good opportunity to practice my airbrushing skills, but I'll tell more about it later.

Soon I will show you how I painted her shield, because I managed to document it in detail.

Yesterday I also made an additional gaming base for the Tau model. I will show it when I download pictures from the camera.

W chwilach kiedy nie robię za podpórkę dłubię Red Sonję. Model jest suuuuper! Fajnie mi się ją maluje. Na dodatek udało mi się poćwiczyć z aerografem, ale o tym później.

Wkrótce pokażę Wam jak malowałam jej tarczę, bo to udało mi się nawet szczegółowo udokumentować.

Wczoraj zrobiłam dodatkową podstawkę do gry dla Taua. Też wrzucę, jak tylko zrzucę fotki z aparatu.

I still remember about Arkadiusz's question:

"Could you tell which paints you like the most? I mean metallics, normal paints and washes. Such knowledge comes from practice, and it could be a valuable tip for beginning painters, especially thsat not always all paints  from one manufacturer are of the same quality."

I already described how I prepared the base for this model, so let's focus on the miniature now:

1. priming it with grey spray primer

2. applying silver alcohol-based metallic paint with my airbrush

3. applying hairspray

4. airbrushing the armor with:

• Vallejo GI Sepia + Vallejo GI Brown + Vallejo GC Cayman Green, to make sure that inks don't pool like water on glass
• Vallejo GI Sepia + Vallejo GI Brown
• zenithally applied Vallejo GC Cayman Green + a little Vallejo GI Sepia
• zenithally applied Vallejo GC Cayman Green
• smaller and smaller highlights with a mix of: Vallejo GC Cayman Green + Vallejo MC 952 Lemon Yellow

My work was mostly about emphasizing the direction of light, increasing the contrast and centralizing the light on the model. 

The base color for the armor was Vallejo GC Cayman Green.

I highlighted it on the armor with Vallejo MC 952 Lemon Yellow,

and the final highlights were done with a mix of: Vallejo MC 837 Pale Sand + P3 Morrow White. It ended up very close to P3 Menoth White Highlight, but the paint bottle was empty so I had to resort to using a mix.

Shading the base color (Vallejo GC Cayman Green) was done by adding the mix of: Vallejo GI 72092 Brown + Vallejo GI 72091 Sepia.

Before taking the photo I managed to add a little dark paint into the recesses just after airbrushing:

Głównie moja praca polegała na podkreśleniu kierunku światła, wzmocnieniu kontrastu, i zcentralizowaniu oświetlenia na modelu.

Kolorem wyjściowym pancerza był Cayman Green, Vallejo z Game Color.

Rozjaśniałam go na pancerzu  kolorem z Vallejo MC 952 Lemon Yellow, 

a ostateczne rozjaśnienia były robione mixem z: Vallejo MC 837 Pale Sand + P3 Morrow White. Wyszedł z tego właściwie P3 Menoth White Highlight, ale akurat pojemnik miałam pusty i musiałam się poratować miksem.

Cieniowanie koloru wyjściowego (Vallejo GC Cayman Green)

robiłam dodając do niego miks z: Vallejo GI 72092 Brown + Vallejo GI 72091 Sepia.

Efekt przed i po np. tu:

The next stage was adding battle damage.

I scratched the paint with a knife, and thanks to the hairspray applied in early stages of my painting (see above) the layer of metallic paint was revealed, and not scratched off like the green paint.

As far as scratching is concerned I am a novice, so some paint chips were quite uncontrolled. I think that a more experienced person doesn't lose control over the process. For example I didn't plan so strong paint chipping on the backpack. The paint peeled off with larger patches. 

It also turned out that I didn't apply the hairspray in an even coat, and so in some spots the metallic paint was very likely to peel off as well. 

If it had only chipped off it would still be easy, but this also didn't allow me to try scraping the paint off with a brush. I was afraid that while reaching the metallic layer the brush will spread metallic pigment all over the surface.

I am mentioning all my mistakes so you may be able to avoid repeating them ;) It's much better to learn from mistakes of others than your own.

For a short time I stopped chipping the paint in order to paint a freehand.

I took the patterns from a Tau decal sheet.

I hope I did no faux-pas. I inscribed one Tau symbol into another (the most popular one), and filled the empty space with Tau runes.

After painting the shield I scraped some paint off it... but why am I writing it ;] you can see it here:

Kolejny etap to uszkodzenia.

Zdrapywałam farbę nożykiem, a dzięki lakierowi do włosów nałożonemu na początkowym epapie prac (patrz wyżej) spodnia warstwa metalicznego koloru została ujawniona a nie zdrapana jak zielona.

W skrobaniu jestem nowicjuszką i przez to niektóre odpryski były dość niekontrolowane. Wydaje mi się, że bardziej wprawionej osobie to nie wychodzi spod kontroli. Np. nie planowałam tak silnych odprysków na plecaku. Farba odskakiwała większymi płatami.

Na dodatek okazało się, że lakier nałożyłam nierównomiernie i bywały miejsca, gdzie metaliczna farba też chętnie by odeszła.

Jak by tylko odpryskiwała, to był by pikuś, ale przez to nie mogłam spróbować jak się przeciera/wyciera farbę przebijając się do metalu za pomocą pędzla. Obawiałam się, że przebijając się do metalicznej warstwy, pędzel rozniesie mi metalowy pigment po całej powierzchni.

Wspominam o tych wszytkich potknięciach, bo może Wam uda się uniknąć takich numerów ;) Przyjemniej uczyć się na cudzych błędach niż własnych.

Odeszłam na chwilę od odprysków i zabrałam się za malowanie freehandu.

Wzory wykorzystane, zaczerpnęłam z arkusza kalkomanii do Tau.

Mam nadzieję, że nie popełniłam faux pas.

W jeden symbol Tau wpisałam inny (ten najpopularniejszy), a pustą przestrzeń zapełniłam runami.

Po malowaniu tarczę obdrapałam... ale po co ja to wszytko piszę ;] sami zobaczcie:

I covered the scratches with a glaze of Citadel Washes, which emphasized shapes of the scratches.

Obdrapania pokryłam laserunkiem z Citadel Washes, podkreśliło to kształt zadrapań.

Then I was applying dirt to metal with colors that I previously used to shade the armor: Vallejo GI 72092 Brown and Vallejo GI 72091 Sepia.

Potem brudziłam głównie metal kolorami jake wczesniej stosowałam do cieniowania pancerza, czyli: Vallejo GI 72092 Brown i Vallejo GI 72091 Sepia.

Sometimes I highlighed edges of paint chips, using the same colors as with highlighting the armor.

Niekiedy rojasniałam krawędzie odprysków - kolory jak przy rozjasnianiu pancerza.

Finally I took a critical look at the armor and decided it looked boring, so I added a symbol on the torso, and some display screens with imaginary numbers on the weapons. Plus a few diodes and weathering on the hooves ^^

Na koniec krytycznie spojrzałam na pancerz i uznałam, że jest nudno, więc na tułowiu dołożyłam znaczek, a na broni wyświetlacze ze zmyśloną numeracją. Do tego parę diodek i podniszczenia na raciczkach ^^

I added some dried leaves to the base, just like this:

Oh my.... Painting Mum's Christmas

Welcome after a long break!

The period preceding Xmas holidays is a torture for the lazy, because even laziest people have to do something at that time :P

But they can make up for that during the holidays.

In this year the biggest question for me was not how to avoid doing anything, but how to reconcile the recommended daily schedule of our baby with the chaos which always accompanies  the preparations (our preparations). Which means: what can I do during which period of his activity not to turn his world upside down.

Unfortunately it all ended with a 30-minutes -long thinking with a ballpen in the air. 

Witam po długiej przerwie.

Okres przed świętami to udręka dla leniuchów, bo wtedy nawet największy leń musi coś robić ;P

Ale za to w Święta można sobie to odbić.

Dla mnie jednak największą zagwozdką, w tym roku, nie było jak nic nie robić, a jak pogodzić zalecany rytm i rytuały codzienne dziecka z chaosem jaki zawsze towarzyszy przygotowaniom (naszym przygotowaniom). Czyli: co mogę robić w której porze aktywności, żeby nie wywracać malcowi świata do góry nogami. Niestety skończyło się na 30-minutowym dumaniu z długopisem w powietrzu.

Eventually we found that Balrog takes such lifestyle pretty well. 

Long hours of shopping were a good opportunity for testing his seduction skills on female shop assistants (unfortunately it was of little use when it came to paying).

And Xmas Eve meetings turned out to be a great moment to fill his tummy up. With what? Let me explain: 40 persons on the meeting meant like 7 consecrated wafers for Balrog ^^

I'm not even asking about your stomachs, because you surely needed some digestive medicine :P

Koniec końców, okazało się, że Balrog wcale nieźle znosi życie w taki sposób.

Wielogodzinne zakupy okazały się świetną okazją do sprawdzania technik uwodzenia na ekspedientkach (niestety nie przydało się to przy płaceniu).

A spotkania wigilijne to świetna okazja do wypchania brzucha po brzegi. Czym? Już piszę: 40 osób na sali, to dla Balroga jakieś 7 opłatków ^^

O Wasze brzuchy nawet nie pytam, bo pewnie bez Ranigastu się nie obywa ;P

Unfortunately in our plans we didn't take into account the fact that with a baby you do everything twice slower. That's why we were late for the Xmas Eve supper. Packing of presents, "traditionally" done at the last moment, took us 3 hours...

The preparations kept me away from miniatures, so I didn't manage to do much in the meantime.

I managed to start painting Red Sonja, also known as Verthandi Burning Ice 54mm from Andrea Miniatures:

W swoich planach przedświątecznych nie wzięliśmy jednak pod uwagę, że z dzieckiem wszystko robi się 2x dłużej. Z tej też przyczyny wylądowaliśmy spóźnieni na Wigilię. „Tradycyjne” - pakowanie prezentów na ostatnią chwilę, zajęło nam 3h.

Przygotowania odciągnęły mnie od figurek, więc wiele nie zrobiłam w tym czasie.

Udało mi się zacząć malować Red Sonję, czyli Verthandi Burning Ice 54mm z Andrea Miniatures:

So far so good. I could practice airbrushing (I'll post photos from this stage later), and the mini didn't require much sanding and polishing. There was only one casting fault: serious sieve on her chest (lost of holes). 

Now I am painting her hair - I need to do it quickly, to be able to adjust the rest of my color scheme to this crucial element.

Do tej pory jest bardzo przyjemnie. Mogłam pouczyć się aerografowania (zdjęcia z tego etapu podrzucę lada moment), piłowania i wygładzania było niewiele. Miała tylko jeden feler odlewniczy, a mianowicie spore sitko na klatce piersiowej (spora ilość dziur).

Obecnie jestem na etapie malowania włosów – muszę je szybko pomalować, żeby móc potem wszytko inne im podporządkować kolorystycznie.

Postanowił wypuścić kolejny, trzeci ząb.

Rodzinny wolontariat odciąża mnie przez 3h (czas na regenerację) Staram się wtedy znaleźć czas na malowanie.

Trzymajcie kciuki za tego zęba, bo mnie wykończy.

And so I cannot hide my damage from you ;)

The model is being finished but this week was a complete Saigon (no offense meant to anyone ;))

The Super-Grandma flew away to save other people from oppression, and in the meantime the Balrog prepared a real attraction for me: He decided to grow the third tooth.

The family volunteer is helping me for 3 hours (enough time for regeneration) and I am trying to find time for painting then. 

Keep your fingers crossed for this tooth, or it's gonna kill me.

Już wracam do modelu:

Kombinuję z korozją, bo chcę, żeby była wyraźnie widoczna zarówno w miejscach oświetlonych, jak i zacienionych. Sama jestem ciekawa, czy tak się da, no i przede wszystkim czy wyjdzie mi to spójnie.

Jeśli macie jakieś uwagi/sugestie, piszcie.

Back to the model:

I am tinkering with corrosion because I want it to be well visible both in the highlighted and in the shaded parts. I am curious if it can be done and if I can do it in a coherent way.

Freehand on Tau shield generator

Hi, how was your weekend?

Ours was very busy and active :) we did some socializing, some redecoration and some progressing... the last one is about the Balrog of course ;) I don't experience much progress anymore. For example I spent two evenings browsing blogs and forums in search for secret knowledge about dirt and corrosion. And what did it give me? It seems like I didn't learn a thing - still the same. I wonder if it's a matter of breaking the scheme or maybe taste (read: sense of aesthetics)?

Most sources were about historical modeling and I still keep repeating to myself that not everything can be done in a smaller scale ;P I feel terrible justifying myself to myself - what hypocrisy! Maybe I manage to change something one day? Do you have any ideas for this?

Cześć jak weekend?

U nas baaardzo aktywnie :) towarzysko, remontowo, rozwojowo ... to ostatnie to oczywiście o Balrogu ;) Ja się już mało rowijam. Np. przeglądałam przez dwa wieczory blogi i fora w poszukiwaniu nowej wiedzy tajemnej z dziedziny uszkodzeń i korozji. I co mi z tego przyszło? Wygląda jak bym niczego się nie nauczyła - ciągle to samo. Ciekawe czy to kwestia przełamania schematu, czy może gustu (czytaj poczucia estetyki)?

Większość źródeł traktowała o modelarstwie historycznym i powtarzam sobie, że po prostu nie da się wszystkiego przełożyć na mniejszą skalę ;P Okropnie się czuję tłumacząc się sama przed sobą - obłuuuudaaaaa! Może kiedyś uda mi się coś zmienić? Może macie jakieś pomysły?

Scratching the Tau

Eh, it's been a long time since my last update, because I had to take a long weekend off. A forced one. The babysitter was busy at the university, so I was doing the Christmas shopping. And how are your preparations for buying presents going?

In the meantime I started to miss my Tau ;)

Ech dawno się nie odzywałam, bo miałam wymuszony długi weekend. Niania miała zajęcia na uczelni, a ja w tym czasie robiłam zakupy świąteczne. A jak Wam idzie planowanie prezentów?

Zdążyłam zatęsknić za tauem ;)

That was my little foreword to what you can see now:

I applied a layer of metallic paint on the primer. I mean that I applied a layer of alcohol-based Vallejo Silver with an airbrush. Then I started to apply the camouflage color of the armour that you can see.

And now I started scratching the paint off - it was the first time I was doing it. 

I have to decide what to do with it later - I'll surf the internet for some inspiration. And maybe we'll meet somewhere there? ;)

Mały wstępniak do tego co widzicie:

Na podkładzie pierwszą warstwą była farba metaliczna. Tzn. aerografem rozprowadziłam srebrny metalik z Vallejo Silver na bazie alkoholu.

Dopiero na to nakładałam widoczny kolor pancerza.

Teraz wzięłam się za skrobanie - robię to pierwszy raz. 

Muszę przemyśleć co dalej z tym będę robić - pobuszuję po sieci i poszukam inspiracji. Może się gdzieś tam spotkamy ;)
