Young Robert Baratheon tutorial and stuff of legends

Oh, what a weekend it was! I hope that the two-year-old rebellion doesn't get any worse than it is now. I wish we could be counting the days remaining to its end...

After two whole days with the son I deserved a lazy Monday. So did Mahon, but his strange bosses don't seem to understand it ;)

Och, co to był za weekend! Brrrrr, mam nadzieję, że bunt dwulatka nie nasili się bardziej niż jest obecnie. Gdyby tak można odliczać dni do końca...

Po całych dwóch dniach z synem, zasłużyłam na leniwy poniedziałek. Mahoń też, ale jego dziwni szefowie tego nie rozumieją ;)

Balrog has new achievements in decibels, and he's been turning the siren on pretty frequently for like a week now. Fortunately he's lovely in between these noisy incidents, which allows us to recharge our batteries. 

Balrog ma nowe osiągi w decybelach, a syrena załącza mu się od tygodnia nader często. Na szczęście w przerwach jest ćwierkający - daje nam czas na naładowanie akumulatorów. 

And now for a short story. One that I titled: "Because man's scabs become the stuff of legends".

Balrog (presenting a scab from hitting a wardrobe): "And I remember a film that a boy shot a wolf with a gun. And the wolf bit him, because wolves are dangerous. Leonard told me, because a wolf bit me. A wolf or a wardrobe."

A teraz krótka historia. Fragment, który nazwałam: "Bo męskie strupy obrastają w legendy".

Balrog (prezentując strupek od zderzenia z szafą): "A ja pamiętam taki film jak chłopiec zastrzelił wilka ze strzelby, a on go ugryzł, bo wilki są niebezpieczne. Leonard mi powiedział, bo mnie ugryzł wilk. Wilk albo szafa."

And on Tuesday... ;) I started working on a golden tunic for Robert Baratheon.

The model was made by Dark Sword Miniatures, and I chose the base from Scibor's store (and I recommend them gratuitously, as they carry a nice range of products).

I initially planned colors that I wanted to use for the gold-colored fabric:

 Wymyśliłam sobie wstępnie kolory jakie chcę wykorzystać przy malowaniu złotej tkaniny:

I couldn't decide if I should go with Vallejo GC Cobra Leather or Citadel Snakebite Leather.

So I decided to document the differences between these two colors, which will also allow to see how I tested the palette that I chose for painting gold.

This exercise is very good for everybody who used to paint with ready triads. If you want to try painting without limiting yourself to ready colors straight from the pots, I recommend such an exercise before moving on to the miniature:

Choose the colors that you want to use for painting the model. Start with main, dominating colors, and finish with minor, marginal colors. Then think which colors will be placed next to each other and mix them in various proportions to see which mixes could be used for shading.

Wahałam się czy użyć farby Vallejo GC Cobra Leather, czy może Citadel Snakebite Leather.

Wpadłam przy tym na plan udokumentowania dla Was różnic między tymi kolorami, a przy okazji możecie podejrzeć jak badam możliwości palety jaką sobie do malowania złota wybrałam.

To jest dobre ćwiczenie dla każdego, kto do tej pory malował na gotowych triadach. Jeśli chcesz spróbować malować bez ograniczania się do gotowych kolorów z pojemników, to polecam takie ćwiczenie przed malowaniem figurki:

Wybierz kolory jakimi chcesz ją pomalować. Zacznij od kolorów dominujących, a skończ na kolorach marginalnych. Potem pomyśl które kolory będą ze sobą sąsiadować i pomieszaj je w różnych proporcjach, tak by zobaczyć, jaki z odcieni mógłbyś wykorzystać w cieniach, bądź półcieniach.

Let me show you my initial palette after mixing the colors and how I put the knowledge from test mixing into practice. 

The freehand is merely started here, but one can come to some conclusions even at this stage.

Pokażę Wam jak się prezentował mój zestaw kolorów po wymieszaniu i jak wykorzystałam tą wiedzę. Freehand jest dopiero zaczęty, ale kilka wniosków już można wysnuć z tych zdjęć.

That's what Citadel Snakebite Leather looks like after highlighting and darkening.

Tak prezentuje się Snakebite Leather z Citadel po rozjaśnieniu i przyciemnieniu.

And this is darkened and highlighted Vallejo GC Cobra Leather, which can be used as an alternative color for gold NMM.

A to jest przyciemniony i rozjaśniony kolor Cobra Leather z Vallejo GC, który można stosować jako zamiennik do złotego NMM.

Here I highlighted and darkened Vallejo Brown Ink. It turned out to be too pastel in highlights.

Tutaj rozjaśniam i przyciemniam Vallejo Brown Ink. Okazuje się być w rozjaśnieniu zbyt pastelowy.

Here are the tested colors which are supposed to be equivalents: Citadel Snakebite Leather and Vallejo Cobra Leather:

I added P3 Trollblood Base to both colors.

Do obu kolorów dodałam P3 Trollblood Base.

And here I added some Reaper MSP Burgundy Wine to both colors and I think it is a good choice for shading gold NMM on my model.

A tutaj do obu kolorów dodałam trochę Burgundy Wine z Reaper MSP i wydaje mi się to dobrym wyborem jako kolor do przyciemniania złotego NMM na moim modelu.

What would the colors look like if I shaded them with Brown Ink?

A jak prezentowałyby się kolory gdybym przyciemniała je Brown Inkiem?

Such testing of colors and mixes is a common practice for me. 

In fact I rarely use pure colors straight from the pots. I like to test how colors interact when they are mixed or placed next to each other.

Takie wypróbowywanie kolorów jest u mnie codziennością. 

Właściwie to rzadko stosuję kolory czyste, prosto z buteleczek. Lubię sprawdzać jak kolory wpływają na siebie wzajemnie gdy się miesza i zestawia ze sobą. 

I searched for a suitable fabric in the internet but nothing caught my attention.

I thought about checkered pattern but I thought it would be too simple for such a simple model.

So I came up with something like this:

Poszukiwałam w sieci tkaniny i nic nie wpadło mi w oko.

Myślałam o szachownicy, ale uznałam ze jest zbyt prosta, dla tak prostego modelu.

Wymyśliłam coś takiego:

My tests on the palette led me to choosing Citadel Snakebite Leather with a slight addition of Trollblood Base.

Po próbach na palecie zdecydowałam się na Citadel Snakebite Leather, ale z odrobiną Troolblood Base.

Highlighted color of my NMM looks like this on the palette:

Let me show you what the pattern looks like in pale colors on dark background and vice versa. I can also check if the pattern will look good in smaller scale and what size will be most convenient for me to  paint. 

Pokażę Wam jak wygląda wzór jasny na ciemnym tle i odwrotnie. Mogę też przy okazji sprawdzić na brudno jak wzór prezentuje się w mniejszej skali i jaką wielkość kratki będzie mi się wygodniej malowało.  

If you give it a try, you will see that it's easier to paint with the darker color. Why?

Well, we usually choose a fine brush for such a detailed freehand. The smaller the brush is, the less paint it holds and so the paint dries faster. Light colors tend to dry faster than dark ones, so a highlighted freehand can be rougher and not as smooth as one that was only shaded.

Kiedy podejmiecie się takiego testu, to sami zauważycie, że ciemną farbą maluje się wygodniej. Dlaczego?

Do tak drobnego freehandu wybieramy zwykle drobny pędzelek, a im mniejszy tym mniej farby nabiera i co za tym idzie, farba szybciej zasycha. Jasne farby mają to do siebie, że szybciej schną od ciemnych. Dlatego freehand rozjaśniany może być bardziej chropowaty i wymęczony, od przyciemnianego.

This is the color of dark lines in my freehand. I made it by mixing Brown Ink with Burgundy Wine.

Shaky hands, Mixing paints...

So after a whole week I finally went out of my appartment.

Yesterday we went to become friends with other children - Balrog ate his first fritter, chased balls in a pool and snatched toys from his colleagues ;) but he didn't get beaten badly - everything was under control.

And today I took my boys to a museum. We strolled from one fire extinguisher to another - they were the only attractions at the level of little visitors' eyes. Balrog was privileged thanks to his height - he was the only one whose noises were forgiven - and he felt like singing... I am not really surprised as there were many nudes presented in the museum, so he might feel inspired to sing some dirty songs ;)

Nooo po całym tygodniu w domu wyściubiłam nos za drzwi.

Wczoraj byliśmy zakolegować się z innymi dziećmi - Balrog wcinał pierwszego racucha, gonił w baseniku za piłkami i podbierał zabawki kolegom ;) ale za mocno po kubku nie dostał - wszystko pod kontrolą.

Dziś za to wyciągnęłam chłopaków do muzeum. Spacerowaliśmy od gaśnicy do gaśnicy - jedyne atrakcje na wysokości oczu małych zwiedzających. Balrog miał przywileje z racji wzrostu - był jedynym, któremu wybaczano hałasy - na przyśpiewki mu się zebrało... trochę się nie dziwię, bo same golizny dookoła, więc sprośne kawałki mogły cisnąć się na język. ;)

Sometimes I get shaky hands too. Remembering to breath usually helps for me. If it doesn't eating something will. Ofcource these are just two reasons for shaky hands...

I've been painting for about six months now, only showcase-style, and your blog has some great tips! Trying a lot of different techniques by different people has really helped me to improve my painting. I will absolutely try that second method of painting sometime.

 Here is something I did, and some of you might want to try: Just to try something different and to train my eye for seeing the colors as they are, I tried to paint the skin of a figure green. The trick was not using any greens, only a cold yellow, brownish warm yellow, a blue and a black. I mixed everything on a wet palette as I needed the color. The torso and the head is painted more with the brownish yellow and the limbs with the colder one. There is more blue in the limbs than the torso and head. There is more blue in the shadows and more cold yellow in the hilights. It made the surface quite nice continuously changing lively color. It was quite difficult to make the blends smooth because it was so hard to make the color what it needed to be. The whole thing was great training for blending, mixing the colors on wet palette and eye-color-coordination.

And sorry for the completely unrelated rant about my own painting experiences :)

Tułów i głowę pomalowałem bardziej brązowawą żółcią, a kończyny tą chłodniejszą. Na kończynach jest więcej niebieskiego niż na tułowiu i głowie. Więcej niebieskiego jest w cieniach, a w rozjaśnieniach więcej chłodnej żółci. Dzięki temu powierzchnia stała się ładna, ciągle zmieniająca swój żywy kolor. Dość trudno było utrzymać gładkość przejść kolorów, bo trudno było mi uzyswkać te kolory, których konkretnie potrzebowałem. Było to świetnym ćwiczeniem w przejściach kolorów, mieszaniu kolorów na mokrej palecie i koordynacji oko-kolor.

Przepraszam za odbiegającą od tematu tyradę na temat moich doświadczeń malarskich. :)

Regadring the problem of shaky hands, I use the same methods to deal with it. My brother-in-law prefers a glass of something stronger ;) but what he does is some kind of engineering designs and it's only very rarely.

Sometimes I can see a photo of a painter who keeps his elbows on the table and paints with hands on the level of his eyes. I would be unable to do it this way. I need to rest my arms on something at the level of wrists - I think it reduces shaking of my hands. Or at least it makes me feel more comfortable and secure this way.

W kwestii trzęsących się rąk, to mam te same sposoby. Mój szwagier faworyzuje kieliszeczek czego mocniejszego ;) ale on robi projekty od wielkiego dzwonu.

Czasem na zdjęciach widzę malarza, który podpiera łokcie o blat i maluje z uniesionymi rękoma na wysokość oczu. U mnie to nie mozliwe. Podpieram ręce na wysokości nadgarstów - tak sobie myślę, że pewnie niweluje mi to drganie dłoni. Ja się w każdym razie czuję pewniej.

Regarding the subject of mixing colors for painting skin, the way you described is something I use pretty often :) even though I don't use the wetblending method. I like to reduce the number of paints used... and I think that taking another green color from my drawer seems more time consuming to me than mixing Citadel's Snakebite Leather (that I used for NMM gold) and Vallejo's Night Blue (that I used for painting a cape) which are already on my desk. I just mix these two colors and am sure that the color will match other colors on the miniature.

A w temacie miesania kolorów na skórę, to i ja bardzo często tak maluję :) choć nie stosuję techniki malowania na mokro. Lubię ograniczać ilość farb ... a inna sprawa, że wydaje mi się bardziej czasochłonne dobieranie farby z szuflady w kolorze zielonym, skoro na stole mam np. Snakebite Leather z Citadel bo malowałam złoto w NMM i Night Blue z Vallejo którym malowałam pelerynę. Mieszam oba kolory i mam pewność, że będzie mi ten kolor pasował do sąsiadujących barw.

Moreover, I tend to get bored with the colors I have in my drawer - I used so many color schemes already, and then I get another customer asking me to paint a space marine... So to make painting more interesting, I make my own color mixes for his blue armor :-> Many other painters most likely don't even care and put all these dark blues into one box. ;) But for me it's what makes painting more enjoyable.

And do you prefer to use ready colors or to make your own mixes? 

Poza tym z czasem nudzą mi się kolory z szuflady - wiele ze schematów juz przerabiałam, a tu trafia się kolejny klient na marinsa ... no to żeby sobie uatrakcyjnić malowanie, robię sobie własną mieszankę na niebieski pancerz :> Inna sprawa, że inni nie zwracają na to uwagi i szufladkują wszystkie te granaty do jednego pudła ;) ale mnie to uprzyjemnia malowanie.

 A czy Wy wolicie gotowe kolory, czy może własne mieszanki?
